CollaborativeInnovation Center for Genetics and Development
Sciencehas changed our life in unthinkable ways. As Louis Pasteur once said, knowledge belongs to all mankind. Science has no borders. It is a lightto lighten the torch around the world. Nowadays, science is increasinglyglobalized and committed to solve problems of world wide significance. To promotecooperation between Chinese universities, between universities and researchinstitutes, industry and international institutions, the Chinese Ministry ofEducation (MOE) and Ministry of Finance of China have launched an ambitiousplan to establish as many as 100 “Collaborative Innovation Centers” in variousareas, in 2011; as is tradition in Chinese funding for research and education, the plan is nicknamed “2011 plan”, for the year of launching. The “CollaborativeInnovation Centers” are affiliated with one or more universities, with generousfunding to support faculty and other personnel, to strengthen infrastructureand shared facilities, to attract new scientists, and promote exchanges andcollaboration, thereby elevating the quality and recognition of research atChinese universities.

AsFudan University is recognized for its long tradition and strength in geneticsand recent emphasis in both animal and plant developmental biology, Fudan establishedthe Collaborative Innovation Center for Genetics and Development (CICGD) inSeptember 2012, in collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, NanjingUniversity, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences of the Chinese Academyof Sciences, and Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of ChineseAcademy of Sciences, with additional participation of Yunnan University andXizang University, and partnering with Yale University, Baylor Medical School, and Penn State University.

Fudanis one of the top comprehensive and multi-disciplinary universities in China.Especially, the area of genetics and molecular biology at Fudan was recentlyranked in the top 0.5% in the world by the ESI (Essential Scientific Index),and the best among all Chinese universities. Meanwhile, all three internationalcollaborating institutions have long history in genetics research and are thetop institutions in this area.

YaleUniversity is one of the oldest private universities in America, often rankedas one of the top three universities and graduate schools. The biomedical andgenetics research of Yale University has long been at a leading position. Itsgenetics and molecular biology discipline was recently ranked as 11th of theESI World Rankings. Yale also has one of the three rare hereditary genomesequencing center” in USA. Baylor College of Medicine is one of America's mostoutstanding medical schools. Its genetics and molecular biology discipline was ranked14th of ESI World Rankings. The Genomics Center at Baylor Medical School is oneof the major centers for the human genome project and has had aleading position in the human genome bioinformatics research. PSU is one of themost well known public universities in USA. It has a strong tradition in theareas of genetics, genomics and evolutionary biology. The genetics andevolutionary biology of PSU was ranked 72th of ESI World Rankings. It also hasa top-ranking plant biology program and has strength in cell and developmentalbiology.

Duringthe past ten years, collaborative and exchange programs have been establishedbetween Fudan and the three US universities. All parties wish to establish along-term collaborative research relationship in the areas of genetics anddevelopment. More concrete plans for further exchanges and collaboration are tobe develop in the very near future.

Thegoal of CICGD is to conduct world-class research and training, by providing anoutstanding environment for collaboration and innovation in genetics anddevelopment. CICGD will promote exchange and collaboration between Institutions, and facilitate the integration of resources and strengths of the participatinginstitutions. The scope of this long-term collaboration may include establish aframework for: 1) improving the levels of research and education in geneticsand development at the institutions; 2) exploring opportunities to conductjoint research projects; 3) exploring academic collaborations to developeducational curricula, training resources, and career development programs toprepare the next generation of investigators and leaders to conduct geneticsand development research.

TheCICGD is focused on understanding of fundamental questions of genetics, particularlythe mechanisms of mutation and homologous recombination, and their impact onhuman health and developmental biology. The successful operation of the CICGDwill provide an excellent environment for original and creative collaboration betweenleading scientists. Currently, there are four focuses of the CICGD: 1) themolecular mechanism of gene mutation and evolution; 2) the molecular basis ofhomologous recombination; 3) the genetic basis of major human diseases; and 4)the regulation of animal and plant development. To ensure the proper functionsof the CICGD, an administration office and several committees have been established, including the governing council, the management committee, the academiccommittee, and the recruitment and promotion committee, to ensure the normaloperation and development of the CICGD.

TheCICGD has already assembled an excellent team of research scientists. Currently, there are 43 principle investigators (PIs), including 10 senior PIs, 24 advancedPIs, and 9 junior PIs.
